Charlie is a psychiatrist on faculty of UMass. School of Medicine\, author of the book DBT Principles in Action: Acceptance\, Change\, and Dialectics (Guilford Press\, 2016)\, DBT practitioner\, consultant\, and trainer for 30 years. He has an engaging teaching style—crisp\, illustrated with stories\, punctuated with DBT songs\, and has been  said to embody DBT as he teaches it.  Catch his DBT podcasts as well as additional information/resources at http://charlieswenson.com/ Kathryn is a Linehan Board Certified DBT therapist in private practice in Denver\, CO\, and a teacher/trainer of DBT in her role as an instructor in the PracticeGround online Learning Community\, and as an adjunct instructor at the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work. She brings energy\, humor\, and depth in her teaching style to enhance the learning process.      \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n dates \n \n \n \n Part 1: (ONLINE): July 11-15\, 2021.  To accommodate social distancing measures\, Part 1 will be entirely ONLINE using a Zoom platform for five consecutive days. Online sessions will run each training day from 10 am-6:20 pm Eastern Time so participants from many time zones can join. This will allow for many small breaks throughout the 7-hour teaching days.   Part 2: January 9-13\, 2022 LIVE in Brooklyn\, NY (if public health interests allow) with a remote ZOOM option.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n description \n \n \n \n Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) helps individuals with complex\, chronic\, and utterly painful problems\, to find their way out of misery and build lives worth living. This Intensive Workshop equips therapists with the knowledge and behavioral skill sets needed to help clients on such a journey! Whether you are already a member or planning to join an established DBT Consultation team\, or hoping to establish a new team and program\, join instructor Charles Swenson\, MD\, and Kathryn Patrick\, LCSW\, for this dynamic intensive workshop\, and leave well-prepared for the work ahead!  DBT is a treatment that is delivered to a group of patients by a clinical team. In this training\, participants will learn how to build\, maintain\, strengthen\, and function effectively in the context of a DBT Consultation Team. Entire teams or members of teams who have not yet been intensively trained in DBT are encouraged to attend together. However\, individuals\, who are in DBT teams\, or who anticipate being in DBT teams\, are also encouraged to apply. For the purposes of this workshop\, these individual practitioners will be placed together in training “teams” for purposes of discussion\, practice\, and to remain consistent with applying DBT in a team context.  The workshop is conducted in two five-day session\, Part 1 and Part 2\, separated by 5 months. During Part 1 the instructors will teach theory\, structuring\, and practice of DBT in depth\, using lectures\, videotapes\, role-play demonstrations\, and participant exercises and deliberate practices. During the interval between Parts 1 and 2\, participants will complete practice assignments and a multiple choice exam to consolidate their knowledge bases; to design\, begin to implement\, or strengthen their DBT programs; to conceptualize cases in DBT terms; and to engage in the use of DBT skills and treatment strategies. During the five-month interval\, the instructors will interact with individuals and teams to help with program development\, case questions\, and assistance with the homework assignment as needed. During Part 2\, teams and individuals will present their work and receive consultation on their programs and cases. At this point\, the principles and details of adapting DBT to specific populations and treatment contexts will also be addressed. Part 2 will involve further teaching and demonstration of DBT strategies\, with multiple opportunities for participants to practice the treatment with feedback.   Standard DBT is a treatment that requires participation in a DBT consultation team.  Although this workshop does not require team attendance\, there will be an emphasis on the nature and practice of DBT consultation teams.  Solo participants will be facilitated to “team up” with other solo participants to interact as a training team during the training (although this is not a requirement)         \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n There are two main options for DBT participation \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DBT Ten-day Intensive Workshop\n \n This training is divided into two 5-day segments\, with between-session practice assignments to ensure generalization and consolidation of learning. To protect the health and safety of all participants and their communities we will not meet live for Part 1. Online sessions will run 10 am-6:20 pm Eastern Time so participants from many time zones can join\, and breaks will be scheduled throughout the days. While we cannot safely gather in large groups during the pandemic\, we work hard to create the sense of community and cohesion that are so critical to positive learning environments.   Part 1 (ONLINE): July 11th-15th\, 2021 Part 1 of the workshop will cover topics including research findings\, theory\, structure\, strategies\, and skills\, to provide a comprehensive knowledge base for practice. Teaching formats will include live instruction with clinical illustrations\, and demonstrations through role play and video examples. Participants will also be encouraged to send questions about the particular topics by email in advance in order to facilitate enhanced group participation. Additionally\, to help everyone hit the ground running in learning the DBT skills—an essential ingredient of any DBT intensive or foundational training—each registrant will gain access to videos in which faculty have taught all four modules of skills\, approximately 1 ½ hour per module. Participants will be expected to view these teachings prior to the intensive. Then faculty can dive into finer points of application and teaching in the “live” Zoom setting.  Part 2: January 9th-13th\, 2022 LIVE in Brooklyn\, NY (if public health interests allow) with a remote ZOOM option   Topics will include consultation to build programs and treat cases; teaching of case conceptualization; adaptations of DBT to populations such as teens\, families\, substance use disorders\, and others; and tons of practice of DBT strategies and skills training.     Participant who has completed all assignments and who has shown consistent attendance receives a certificate of completion of the Ten-day Intensive Training.   Cost: $2\,850.00 to be paid in full prior to starting. Early bird special (prior to May 15th) $2700. Additional discounts for groups of 3 or more–$300 per registrant.   \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n DBT 5 day Foundational Training\n \n Those who are members of- or hope to join an intensively trained DBT consultation team may elect to attend only Part 1 of this workshop (described above) to receive the foundational training needed to conduct DBT in their practice.   \nCost: $1\,450.00 ($1375 early bird) to be paid in full prior to starting \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n general information \n \n \n \n Registrants will need remote access for Part 1 webinar. His Intensive DBT workshop provided an opportunity for both novice and seasoned professionals to re-examine their own conceptualization of clinical information and to engage in the use of DBT skills and treatment strategies more consistently and effectively. Dr Swenson possess a unique ability to present complicated clinical information in an engaging and relevant manner through the inclusion of numerous clinical vignettes and examples and with his masterful teaching style. His background in psychoanalysis further lends a richness to the presentation and demonstrates the possibility of creativity with the conceptualization and treatment while maintaining strict adherence to the core DBT principles.Shoshana Friedman\, Psy.D.                                                                                                    Private Practice: Clifton\, NJ   \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Aside from being an amazing presenter\, Dr. Swenson is an excellent role model for teaching DBT by example as manifested by his ambience and warmth. A true overload of many blended interventions packaged together leaving the group eager for more. Dr. Swenson’ s smooth delivery of such complex intervention was a shining example of everything one can speculate for professional development par excellence. Definitely an iconic experience!Naftali (Thomas) Gross\, Ph.D Candidate Clinical Psychology \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Charlie’s training was excellent. He explains DBT in an easy to digest manner. It was the perfect addition to my previous DBT knowledge and I feel well prepared to use DBT in my therapy practice.” Best\,Madison ShepardMemphis\, TN \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Participating in this training was “educational\, enjoyable\, inspiring\, fun yes I said fun!!” Dr Swenson taught me a better understanding how to recognize our personal limits as clinicians\, and creating a much needed space for that. He embodies the meaning of compassion and is super creative when joining with clients. Thank You\, Devorah Goldman\, LCSWPsychotherapist\, Private Practice\,Brooklyn\, NY. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Swenson is an amazing presenter.  He is kind\, compassionate\, interesting\, engaging\, has a wealth of experience and knowledge\, and he has a real passion for the work that he does. Paul Kaplan\, LCSW \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Swenson —  Thank you SO MUCH for another awesome 5 days of DBT! After wrapping up yesterday\, I felt so excited and “ready” to get back to work and start implementing some of the techniques and skills we practiced. I thoroughly enjoyed Part 1\, but Part 2 this week has really been great. Through the role plays\, presentations and review of the materials it felt like the concepts and the “essence” of the skills came together for me in ways it had not during Part 1. I’m leaving these last 5 days: 1. feeling more confident in my abilities (vs. feeling intimidated and maybe slightly terrified in July)\, 2. with a greater interest in further\, more advanced DBT trainings\, and 3. with an overall better understanding of the treatment and ways in which I revise what I’m doing to be more effective with my own patients. These are great feelings! Thank you so much for all your knowledge this week — you’re great at teaching this stuff. I found this to be interesting\, engaging\, worthwhile\, applicable\, all the things I had hoped. Thanks again for an awesome 10 days! Would love to return for a 2 or 3 day continuing intensive… I’d definitely be there if offered. Best\,Kaitlyn E. Murphy\, LMHC \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n This class was incredibly beneficial to my practice. I learned a gamut of skills that will help not only borderline clients but all. Not only that\, it was FUN! Everyone was bonded by the end. Swenson is so funny\, smart\, and open\, all qualities I hope to emulate with my clients and in life.Michele Koury MHC -LP \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Swenson is extremely knowledgeable\, engaging and a master of DBT. The material really came alive through his presentation. I have already been incorporating DBT in my work with my clients and seeing very positive results.
