Cognitive Behavioral Insomnia Therapy (CBT-I) Skills for Adults with Depression, Chronic Pain and Anxiety

Description

Unfortunately, outdated and inaccurate information regarding the treatment of insomnia is prevalent. For instance, misconceptions persist about the effectiveness of strategies like sleep hygiene, melatonin usage, and avoiding blue light for better sleep. Such misinformation poses challenges for healthcare professionals who are not specialized in sleep, as they may struggle to determine the most suitable approach to effectively address co-occurring insomnia in individuals dealing with comorbid issues, such as depression, pain and anxiety. Cognitive Behavioral Insomnia Therapy (CBT-I) offers an effective solution, with strategies that align well with cognitive behavioral approaches commonly used to manage depression, chronic pain and anxiety. You will gain a user-friendly foundation in understanding sleep regulation, equipping them to troubleshoot sleep-related problems adeptly. The training will encompass the application of CBT-I in cases where it co-occurs with prevalent disorders such as depression, pain and anxiety. This workshop will focus mainly on collaborating on a tailored sleep-wake schedule, re-associating the bed with sleep via stimulus control, counter-arousal strategies, and cognitive therapy. Beyond the fundamentals of CBT-I for insomnia, the workshop will explore potential adaptations required in situations involving trauma, mood disorders, and anxiety. Using didactics and experiential case study exercises with sleep logs, you will begin to practice therapy skills in the workshop to facilitate uptake into your practice.
