Evidence-based Diagnosis and Psychosocial Treatment of ADHD across the Lifespan
Description
This workshop will review evidence-based diagnostic and psychosocial treatment methods for ADHD across the lifespan including childhood, adolescence and adulthood. With respect to diagnosis, we will review the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD and the latest scientific conceptualization of ADHD to discuss the boundaries of ADHD diagnosis. We will discuss factors that contribute to the emergence of ADHD symptoms in a neurodevelopmental context, including the concepts of late-identified and late-onset ADHD. We will review current guidelines and practice parameters for the assessment of ADHD. This will include attention to when and how to screen for ADHD. Finally, we will go through each of the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD and discuss best practices for evaluating its presence in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. This conversation will involve showcasing of instruments with an evidence-base and presentation of data on low value practices that may be burdensome to clients or reduce diagnostic accuracy. Particular attention will be given to the differential diagnostic process.
With respect to psychosocial treatment, we will take a common elements approach to defining which psychotherapeutic strategies are effective for children through adults with ADHD and developmentally specific adaptations to evidence-based approaches. We will learn about specific manualized programs that can be a good source for building a treatment plan when treating an individual with ADHD. We will also discuss how engagement focused approaches like Motivational Interviewing (MI) and recreational components of child-focused treatments can be integrated to promote active participation in treatment. The research literature on child, adolescent, and adult psychotherapeutic approaches will also be reviewed with consideration of factors that predict maximally efficacious treatment.
Instructors
Dr. Margaret Sibley is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a clinical psychologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She has authored over 140 scholarly publications on ADHD with research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Institute of Education Sciences. She is on the steering committee for the Adult ADHD guidelines being released by the American Professional Society for ADHD and Related Disorders (APSARD), a Professional Advisory Board Member for Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Attention Disorders. She is the author of Parent-Teen Therapy for Executive Function Deficits and ADHD: Building Skills and Motivation published by Guilford Press in 2017.
Evidence-based Diagnosis and Psychosocial Treatment of ADHD across the Lifespan
Objectives
1. Utilize diagnostic and screening tools that maximize diagnostic accuracy when assessing ADHD across the lifespan.
2. Identify key sources of diagnostic confusion in the assessment of ADHD and how to complete a sound differential diagnostic process.
3. Develop methods for to protect against misdiagnosis in the context of self-referred adult ADHD assessment.
4. List common elements of empirically supported psychosocial treatments for ADHD across the lifespan.
5. Adapt treatment approaches based on the engagement level of the client and/or their family.
6. Build treatment plans that may incorporate evidence-based modules from a range of research backed treatments for clients with ADHD.
