Motivational Interviewing – Two-Day Basic Training (2027)

Description

Motivational interviewing is an evidenced-based clinical approach that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings to find the internal motivation to change their behavior. It is a practical, empathetic, and short-term process that takes into consideration how difficult it is to make life changes. Motivational Interviewing emphasizes using a guiding, patient-centered style of interaction to promote behavioral change by helping patients explore their strengths, goals, and values and set personal intentions for values-consistent living. The approach upholds principles that include supporting client autonomy, developing deep empathy, and promoting equal collaboration between the therapist and the client.

This training will provide a basic introduction to motivational interviewing for mental health professionals. The facilitator will use didactic and active learning tools to include the use of: pre and post staff self-assessments, educational and research-based materials, video review and discussion, group role play, trainer feedback, and recommendations for continued training Topics will include: what is motivational interviewing, ambivalence and the change process, recognizing change and sustain talk, identifying roadblocks to change, MI spirit, using OARS (strategies to elicit change talk), forming complex reflections, elicit-provide-elicit, and managing resistance to change.

Motivational Interviewing – Two-Day Basic Training (2027)

Objectives

1. Describe the behavior change process, ambivalence, and the purpose of Motivational Interviewing.

2. Identify roadblocks to change and understand how therapists can side step roadblocks during patient interactions.

3. Notice Client Change Talk and Sustain Talk and how to analyze patient speech to better understand a patient’s readiness for change.

4. Communicate with clients in a way that is consistent with the spirit of motivational interviewing, including emphasizing client autonomy, collaborating with clients as equals, expressing empathy, and building client self-efficacy.

5. Select Open ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries (OARS) that draw change focused speech from the client.

6. Apply the elicit-provide-elicit approach to share information with clients or integrate structured therapy tasks into a Motivational Interviewing Framework.

7. Generate ways to integrate Motivational Interviewing skills and structured tasks into current practice.

8. Expand one’s repertoire of change-talk generating strategies when working with clients.

9. Identify patient resistance to change and become comfortable responding to resistant patients in a way that deescalates and strengthens the therapeutic relationship.
