Description
Psychedelic-assisted therapy continues to develop as a significant new area of mental health treatment, even as its regulatory path forward keeps shifting. This workshop gives healthcare professionals a practical orientation to this new clinical area, including an overview of the most commonly used psychedelic compounds and their effects, and a brief history of the use of psychedelics in mainstream healthcare. The basic model of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy will be described, with particular attention to how preparation and integration sessions shape therapeutic outcomes.
The workshop twill also summarize what the research currently shows, prioritizing more recent and rigorous trial results with MDMA and psilocybin, along with leading theories for how psychedelics produce clinical benefit (e.g., increases in psychological flexibility, meaning, connectedness, and self-transcendence). We will review the shifting legal and regulatory landscape, as well as the current state of regulated psilocybin services in Oregon and Colorado. Diversity and equity issues will be addressed, including disparities in who can access this treatment and the risk of cultural appropriation in the field. We will close with recommendations for further training. Participants will leave with a current, balanced understanding of psychedelic-assisted therapy’s promise and its limitations, equipping them for more informed conversations with clients about risks, benefits, legal status, and the likely timeline for broader access.
Instructors
Brian Pilecki, PhD, is a licensed psychologist, Clinical Services Manager, and Associate Scientist at the Portland Institute for Psychedelic Science (PIPS), a program of Portland Psychotherapy Clinic, Research, and Training Center. He has served as a study therapist on several clinical trials, including research investigating MDMA-assisted therapy for social anxiety disorder, and provides psilocybin facilitation to individuals and groups in Oregon. Brian is an instructor for Fluence, training psilocybin facilitators in Oregon and study therapists working on clinical trials nationally. He co-founded Perspective Retreats, which offers group psilocybin retreats in the Netherlands, and the Portland Integration Network, a network of professionals offering specialized psychedelic-related care in Oregon. He is the author of ACT-Informed Exposure for Anxiety and co-hosts the podcast Altered States of Context, on the intersection of psychotherapy and psychedelics.

Objectives
1. Describe the theoretical model of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, including the clinical role of preparation and integration.
2. Summarize current research findings and the evolving legal/regulatory status of psychedelic-assisted treatments, including recent FDA and state-level developments.
3. Identify diversity, equity, and access considerations relevant to the delivery of psychedelic-assisted therapy.
