Description
This presentation equips child and adolescent psychologists with essential tools for working with high-conflict families. Participants will explore a clear definition of high-conflict dynamics and gain insight into the broader landscape these families
present. A central focus will be placed on role clarity — helping clinicians understand their specific function within a multidisciplinary context, distinguish their role from other professionals, and navigate the many stakeholders commonly involved
in these cases, including therapists, evaluators, guardians ad litem, and attorneys. The session also addresses ethical considerations and provides practical, evidence-informed strategies for effective intervention with this complex population.
Instructors
Premela Deck, LICSW, JD, PhD is a forensic social worker, family law attorney, educator, and researcher. She leads a forensic mental health practice in Massachusetts offering parent coordination, therapy, custody evaluations, consulting, and support groups for court-involved families. Drawing on her background as a litigator, researcher, and clinician, Premela integrates multidisciplinary perspectives in her work. She serves on the Massachusetts AFCC board and previously directed the High Conflict Parenting course at William James College.

Objectives
1. Participants will be able to identify key concepts of confidentiality and therapeutic privilege, including relevant legal and ethical requirements related to divorce and family therapy cases.
2. Participants will be able to describe at least three principles for working with divorce and high-conflict divorce cases and apply these principles to clinical situations.
3. Participants will be able to explain major court processes involved in divorce cases, including separation agreements, court orders, motions, trials, and the roles of professionals involved in family court proceedings.
